Presentation of the BlastSets project

The knowledge of complete genomes of a growing number of organisms and the accumulation of experimental results produced by high throughput "post-sequencing" approaches at the cellular scale must make it possible to better understand the articulation between the molecular mechanisms and the cellular functions. The integration of this huge amount of heterogeneous data will allow to progress towards a better knowledge of the cell metabolism. This integration is the scientific and technological stake which is the core of our project.

We propose the development of a new method which makes it possible to dynamically bring together heterogeneous information available at the level of complete genomes (or proteomes). It concerns a data integration model enabling the discovery and exploitation of new correpondences between varied information. This project is based on a way of representing biological knowledge which consists in systematically considering knowledge at the level of groups of sequences (genes or proteins).

Our project consists in specifying, designing, producing and validating the system. This work needs skills in various disciplines : mathematics, computer science and biology.

BlastSets is one of the projects supported by the Ministry delegated to Research and New Technologies as part of the ACI IMPBio 2003.
